Green Building: A Genuine Solution for Sustainable Cities

Jakarta, December 11, 2024 – Green building is not just a futuristic concept, but also a genuine solution in driving the urban energy transition. By prioritizing energy efficiency, the use of renewable energy technologies, and sustainable construction practices, green buildings can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This was revealed by Malindo Wardana, Sustainable Energy Transition in Indonesia (SETI) Program Manager, Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) in Webinar Series 2: Urban Energy Transition through Green Buildings on Wednesday (11/12).

“The green building concept can be an important foundation in efforts to overcome the climate crisis in cities. For this reason, collaboration between stakeholders is key. After understanding the big goal of green building development, it is hoped that all parties, including the government, business sector, and community, can work together to bring the best solution,” said Malindo.

Gunawan Eko Movianto, Acting Director of SUPD I, Directorate General of Regional Development, Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA), stated that energy efficiency in commercial and residential buildings is important as an integral part of the national energy transition. In addition, community empowerment is also needed so that they are aware of their rights and responsibilities in the green building process.

“By raising public awareness, green buildings can be more easily accepted and adopted. Regular monitoring of the implementation of green building policies is also important to ensure that the policy is on track, both in terms of technical and management implementation in the regions,” Gunawan said.

Not only that, according to Gunawan, the regulatory aspects and the role of local governments also need to be strengthened. The authority to organize government affairs in the field of Energy and Mineral Resources in the sub-field of New Renewable Energy (NRE) at the district / city level must be supported, including policies that facilitate business actors in building new renewable energy infrastructure. This will help create a conducive environment for investment and innovation in the renewable energy sector.

Meanwhile, Hendro Gunawan, Coordinator of Technical Guidance and Cooperation, Directorate of Energy Conservation, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, emphasized that active cooperation efforts and cross-sector collaboration will accelerate the achievement of strategic targets while reducing emissions in the energy sector. By joining hands and moving forward together, green buildings can be the catalyst that brings a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable urban future.
