Dissemination and Launch of Study “Market Assessment of Domestic Manufacturing Industry for Renewable Energy in Indonesia”

Background

According to a report from the IEA, by 2050, an estimated 80% of the world’s energy consumption will be supplied by renewable energy. Where more than 50% of the supply comes from solar and wind energy. In addition, energy storage systems, especially batteries, will become a support system to support renewable energy-based energy generation, with the total capacity required reaching 3,900 GW in 2050. Taking into account the commitments made by COP28 participants regarding Tripling Renewable Power Capacity by 2030, the need for installed capacity for renewable energy generation, as well as energy storage systems, will continue to increase which needs to be supported by a reliable technology supply chain.

As a country that has committed to achieve Net-Zero Emission by 2060 or sooner, Indonesia has considered optimizing its renewable energy potential, especially from solar and wind energy, to transition from fossil fuel dependency to renewable energy. Based on the National Electricity General Plan (RUKN) 2024-2060, Indonesia targets 73.6% of the total installed capacity in 2060 (443 GW) to be dominated by renewable energy. Of which around 109 GW comes from solar power plants (PLTS), 71.88 GW from wind power plants (PLTB), and around 33 GW is the capacity of energy storage systems, dominated by batteries.

Increasing the capacity of solar power plants, wind farms, and energy storage systems, especially batteries, needs to be supported by preparing the conditions for a reliable domestic manufacturing industry so that the supply of key components such as solar modules, wind turbines, and battery cells is guaranteed and does not interfere with the operation of renewable energy plants. In addition, the existence of the supply chain in the country will provide greater benefits for the socio-economy in Indonesia through the creation of jobs, and also support the 8% economic growth target needed for the Golden Indonesia 2045.
To determine the readiness of the domestic manufacturing industry to produce renewable energy technologies, IESR has conducted an assessment study of the development of the renewable energy technology manufacturing industry in Indonesia, “Market Assessment of Domestic Manufacturing Industry for Renewable Energy in Indonesia”. The results of the study highlighted the opportunity for the manufacturing industry in Indonesia to develop solar module, wind turbine, and battery manufacturing businesses. The development of the manufacturing industry also has the potential to improve the supply chain of renewable energy technology, which has the opportunity to reduce renewable energy investment costs, increase domestic content levels, and create new jobs, up to 6.6 million jobs per year.

In order to disseminate the results of this study, IESR plans to organize the Dissemination and Launching of the “Market Assessment of Domestic Manufacturing Industry for Renewable Energy in Indonesia” Study. This activity is expected to provide new insights for relevant policy makers to formulate policies that are inclusive and encourage the growth of the renewable energy technology manufacturing industry in Indonesia.

Objective
