Research Report Launching “Individual Carbon Footprint Patterns Based on Demographic Profiles in Urban, Suburban, and Rural Areas on Java Island”

Background

The climate crisis we face today is the result of accumulated greenhouse gas emissions from various sectors, including everyday individual activities. According to the IPCC report, to limit global warming to below 1.5°C, global emissions need to be reduced by 43% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. Individual contributions become increasingly important in this context, as daily lifestyles contribute significantly to emissions when combined with a large population and unsustainable consumption patterns. For example, in urban areas on the island of Java, private vehicle use and household electricity consumption contribute the most to an individual’s carbon footprint. In Indonesia, for example, the average individual carbon footprint in 2022 is estimated to reach approximately 2.43 tons of CO₂ per capita per year, with variations depending on location and individual consumption patterns.

JejakKarbonku.id is an interactive platform developed by the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) to raise public awareness and understanding of the importance of calculating carbon footprints in addressing the climate crisis. This platform provides a digital tool that allows individuals and entities to calculate carbon emissions from daily activities and obtain practical recommendations for emissions reduction that are contextual and tailored to each user’s individual characteristics.

To support strengthening climate literacy and accelerating the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy system, informative and accessible tools are needed. JejakKarbonku.id functions not only as an emissions calculator but also as a data- and science-based educational platform. Users can identify the main sources of emissions from consumption patterns, mobility, and lifestyle, complemented by visualization features and up-to-date information that encourage comprehensive learning and behavioral change toward a low-carbon lifestyle.

The IESR has conducted an in-depth study of individual carbon footprint patterns based on demographic profiles in urban, suburban, and rural areas on the island of Java. This research provides a comprehensive overview of the emission contributions of various community groups and demonstrates how regional and demographic characteristics influence the magnitude of their carbon footprint.

To broaden the impact of these findings, the research results are planned to be published in a scientific journal. This step aims to disseminate knowledge to the academic community, policymakers, and other stakeholders, thus providing a foundation for the development of data-driven policies, mitigation strategies, and sustainability initiatives.

As part of the dissemination efforts for these research findings, IESR will host a launch event for a scientific publication related to JejakKarbonku.id. This event will not only serve as a launch event for the research findings but also as a space for interactive discussions involving researchers, policymakers, academics, and community representatives. The discussion will focus on the relevance of the research findings in supporting the energy transition agenda and controlling emissions at the individual level.
