IESR Recommendation to President Joko Widodo on Updating NDC

Indonesia’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions is not sufficient to achieve the target of the Paris Agreement, in keeping the global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times. Based on national commitment documents (NDC) which was just issued in July 2021, Indonesia’s climate targets are still for reduce emissions by 29%-41% by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2060 or sooner
and still raises many questions about the integrity of the scenario.

Through the study of Deep Decarbonization of Indonesia’s Energy System issued by Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), to achieve Paris Agreement targets carbon neutral by 2050, Indonesia must reach the peak of emissions in the energy sector by 2030 and the renewable energy mix in the electricity sector reaches
45%. The energy sector alone must reduce emissions by 314 million tons CO2e to achieve the emission reduction target of 29% by 2030
in accordance with Indonesia’s commitment to the Paris Agreement.
