C20 ECE Working Group Session: Role of G20 Power Utilities in Climate Mitigation Efforts

G20 countries are responsible for about 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions, including land use change and forestry. To align with the 1.5 pathway of the Paris Agreement, the share of renewable energy in electricity generation needs to be increased to at least 75% by 2040 and the share of unabated coal reduced to zero.

G20 countries’ utilities play an important role in climate mitigation. Some utilities have already launched long-term strategies for carbon reduction and fossil fuel phase-down to tackle the climate crisis. Indonesia’s PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) has shown leadership by pledging net zero carbon emissions by 2060 and coal phase-out by 2055. Many of the G20’s utilities are in the stage of revising or coming up with a long-term strategy for the GHG reduction pathway and energy transition.

C20 would like to bring Indonesia’s PLN, an expert from South Africa, an expert from the Republic of Korea, Mexico’s CFE (Comisión Federal de Electricidad), and India’s NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation Limited) to have a discussion on the role and perspectives of utilities’ role in mitigating climate change.

The discussion will explore how we can generate more energy efficiently or by new methods, including exploring energy storage, low-carbon energy systems, clean industrial development as well as grid and renewable integration, and energy efficiency. On the financing issue, the energy transition requires new projects and new investments.
