Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW) 2024
The Governments of Indonesia and Germany have been engaged in a fruitful collaboration in the energy sector for over 30 years, encompassing technical and financial assistance across various renewable energy initiatives. The cooperation stretches across topics of renewable energy upscaling, transmission grid extension, green jobs and skills development as well as inclusive dialogues with civil society organisations, both on national as well as regional level. Indonesia is currently undergoing the process of achieving its energy and climate targets, transitioning to a green economy in line with Vision of Indonesia Emas 2045 and Net Zero Emission by 2060. The bilateral cooperation between Germany and Indonesia aims to provide continuous support and solutions that are adapted to Indonesia’s energy circumstances, national objectives, and arising challenges.
Under this collaborative effort, the Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW) is established as a stakeholder forum of government officials, professionals, private sectors, academia, and non-state actors focusing on sustainable energy issues. ISEW serves as a platform for dialogue, exchange of ideas, and innovative thinking to advance the transformation of Indonesia’s energy system.
The first ISEW was held in 10-14 October 2022, as an initiative under the Clean, Affordable, and Secure Energy (CASE) project that was supported by the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) under the Directorate of Electricity, Telecommunications, and Informatics. The first ISEW equipped the overall theme “Reaching Indonesia’s Net Zero Energy System: Unite for Action and Strategy”, ISEW 2022 was attended by a total of 2.284 participants all throughout 5 days, with 1974 people watching online and 310 people attending the venue.
In 2023, ISEW became a flagship event under the GIZ Energy Programme Indonesia/ASEAN and was co-hosted by the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR). It was held in Jakarta from 10-13 October 2023, with the theme of “United Towards a Decarbonised Energy System” proudly gathered 5.465 participants and more than 90 speakers joining both online and offline.
ISEW 2024 will focus on the flagship theme of “United Towards a Sustainable FutuRE: Advancing the Energy Transition for Indonesia Emas and Net Zero Emissions” and is jointly hosted by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and Bappenas, organised by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in cooperation with other German-funded implementing organisations in Indonesia. ISEW further functions as the annual platform to showcase the long-lasting German-Indonesian Energy Cooperation across both countries’ broad technical and financial cooperation portfolios. Germany’s support and representation at ISEW comes through the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). In addition, ISEW also aims to support the development of the Long- and Medium-Term National Development Plan within the energy sector, particularly by providing feedback from different stakeholders and the public to the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas).
