Seminar: Accelerating Energy Transition in Southeast Asia and The Role of ASEAN Chairmanship Malaysia
Background
Southeast Asia stands as the fifth-largest economy in the world, with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of approximately USD 3.8 trillion in 2023. The region’s economy is projected to triple by 2050, reinforcing its role as a major global economic player. However, this rapid economic expansion is expected to drive a significant increase in energy demand. Without robust climate and energy policies, Southeast Asian nations risk severe economic losses due to climate change, with estimates suggesting a potential GDP decline of 35% by 2050, affecting both economic and social sectors.National Seminar Malaysia
Recognizing the interconnected challenges of economic development and environmental sustainability, ASEAN has outlined its commitment to a balanced and sustainable growth pathway through the ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint. This vision emphasizes enhanced regional connectivity and collaboration to address pressing energy and climate issues. Despite these commitments, ASEAN’s renewable energy share in 2022 stood at only 15.6%, falling short of the 2025 target of 23% and the 2050 goal of 40%. Accelerating the energy transition remains a crucial agenda for the region to ensure economic resilience and climate sustainability.
With Malaysia assuming the ASEAN Chairmanship, a unique opportunity arises to spearhead and strengthen efforts toward energy transition in Southeast Asia. The region faces a critical challenge in aligning economic growth with climate commitments, necessitating collective action to expand renewable energy deployment, improve energy efficiency, and foster greater integration of regional energy markets. Malaysia’s leadership can serve as a platform to enhance policy coordination and drive forward a sustainable energy future.
To support this agenda, the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Coalition (SETC) initiative will conduct a series of strategic engagements in Malaysia. These include a meeting with the ASEAN Chairmanship Committee, a national seminar titled Accelerating Energy Transition in Southeast Asia and the Role of ASEAN Chairmanship Malaysia, and discussions with key ministries and non-state actors in Malaysia. These activities aim to facilitate dialogue, strengthen partnerships, and identify actionable strategies to accelerate ASEAN’s clean energy transition.
Through these engagements, SETC seeks to contribute to a more coordinated regional approach to sustainable energy, leveraging Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship to promote stronger commitments and collaboration among stakeholders. By fostering discussions on policy, finance, and technology, this visit aims to catalyze impactful initiatives that will drive ASEAN closer to its renewable energy and climate resilience goals.
