Baku, November 12, 2024 – Small islands are highly vulnerable to climate change risks. Therefore, energy transformation and climate change mitigation initiatives from the island region are important.
Bali Island is an interesting case study for renewable energy initiatives. The Bali Provincial Government plans to achieve Net-Zero Emission (NZE) by 2045. This target is fifteen years faster than Indonesia’s NZE target.
Fabby Tumiwa, Executive Director of the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), in the Renewable Energy for Rural Revitalization forum, held at the SDG Pavilion, Baku, Azerbaijan (12/11/2024) in the Conference of the Parties (COP) 29 series said that this idea aspires to decarbonize the energy system in Bali Province.
“We do this work together with other organizations. IESR is responsible for the electricity sector. So, we did demand mapping, both projections and historically, and model the fulfillment of this energy with renewable energy,” said Fabby.
Based on the mapping of renewable energy potential carried out by IESR, Bali Island has 26 GW of solar energy and can be combined with a pumped hydro energy system or Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) of 5.8 GW. With this potential, Bali can meet its electricity needs from renewable energy sources. The requirement is the construction of renewable energy power plants which of course require investment.
As a smaller pilot project, IESR is also pushing the Nusa Penida 100% renewable energy 2030 initiative. To achieve this goal, three stages are mapped out, namely
First Stage (2024 – 2027)
Cessation of diesel generator operations during the day, starting installation of PLTS and BESS
Second Stage (2027 – 2029)
Diesel generators are used as backup power, starting the use of biomass generators
Third Stage (2029 – 2030)
Diesel generators are completely stopped and replaced with biodiesel, optimization of the power converter system (PCS), energy management system (EMS), and use of battery storage systems.
A summary of the Nusa Penida roadmap towards 100 percent renewable energy has been prepared by IESR and submitted to the government and relevant stakeholders.
