Denpasar, May 20, 2025 – In addition to its natural beauty, Bali has abundant renewable energy potential reaching more than 26 GW. With this potential, Bali has a great opportunity to meet its electricity needs entirely from renewable energy sources. However, until 2024, the realization of its renewable energy mix has only reached 1.48 percent, with a total installed capacity of 7.45 MW.
To encourage the adoption of renewable energy, the Bali Government has just launched the Acceleration of Rooftop Solar PV Utilization (15/5/2025). This effort is in line with the ambition to realize an Energy Independent Bali and a Net Zero Emission Bali by 2045, 15 years ahead of the national target of 2060. Recognizing the importance of public awareness and participation in the energy transition, the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) in collaboration with the Bali Provincial Manpower and Energy and Mineral Resources Office held Energy Explore Bali on 20-24 May 2025.
The Head of the Bali Provincial Manpower and Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Office, I.B. Setiawan, said that Energy Explore Bali is a place to understand more about various aspects related to renewable energy, including how the involvement/participation of local communities and also the socio-political conditions in Bali affect the development of such energy.
“The responsibility in realizing Bali as a quality, sustainable world tourist destination based on clean energy / renewable energy must be carried out by all parties, including the Central, Provincial, Regency and City Governments, various stakeholders, communities and customs. Through synergy and collaboration, the Bali Provincial Government together with CORE Udayana and IESR are developing the Bali NZE 2045 Roadmap. Currently, through the assistance of IESR, the Bali Provincial Government also has a Roadmap for 100 percent Renewable Energy in Nusa Penida by 2030. The implementation of this roadmap will definitely require community involvement and support from many parties,” Setiawan said.
Marlistya Citraningrum, Sustainable Energy Access Program Manager, IESR said that Energy Explore Bali aims to foster optimism that inclusive renewable energy development is not only possible, but has already happened and needs to be replicated more. In addition, this activity can be a learning vehicle for more massive renewable energy development in the future.
“Through Energy Explore Bali, we want participants to see that the energy transition is real and is a collective action. Starting from Solar PV in public facilities and by businesses, biogas that supports village independence, to microhydro that irrigates remote areas; all of that is not a dream, but is already running and can be expanded. This event is also a cross-sector learning space, as well as a reminder that accelerating the integration of renewable energy requires concrete and sustainable collaboration, with respective roles from the government, community, and business sector. The energy transition is also not just about technology, but about our courage to imagine a cleaner, fairer, and energy independent future for Bali,” said Marlistya.
Energy Explore Bali is attended by various parties from academics, communities, to journalists. The team will visit nine strategic locations to see the positive impact of renewable energy utilization. The destinations visited are solar PV Floating Muara Reservoir Nusa Dua, Solar PV Rooftop Padma Resort Legian, Solar PV Sensatia Botanicals Sanur, Solar PV TPS3R and Subak Keliki Village, Puhu Village and Payangan Village (Biogas Assisted Village), Hydro Panji Muara Sukasada, Solar PV Well Drill Bondalem Village, Solar PV On Grid 16 kWp at Mero Foundation, and Solar PV 1 MWp Kec Kubu, Karangasem Regency.
