Jakarta, 31 October 2025 — The Clean Energy Generation (Gen-B) civil society movement held a meeting with Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), Eddy Soeparno, at the Nusantara III Building, DPR/DPD/MPR RI Complex, Senayan, Jakarta on Wednesday (29/10). This meeting marked an important moment for Indonesia’s young generation to voice their ideas and aspirations regarding the New and Renewable Energy Bill, clean energy transition, and climate justice. Through this dialogue, Gen-B emphasized that young people are not only the recipients of the impacts of energy policies but also strategic partners of the government in accelerating a just and sustainable energy transition.
Four Recommendations from Gen-B for a New Direction in National Energy Policy
During the hearing, Generasi Energi Bersih (Clean Energy Generation) presented four key policy recommendations to strengthen the direction of Indonesia’s national energy transition:
- Integrate Prosumer Rights into the EBET Bill — The EBET Bill must ensure the public’s right to independently produce, use, and sell renewable energy to the national grid at fair and transparent rates.
- Promote Energy Decentralization in 3T Regions — The government should expand access to clean energy through partnerships among village-owned enterprises (BUMDes), energy cooperatives, and local governments.
- Establish a National and Regional Youth Energy Consultative Forum — This forum would serve as a formal platform for youth participation in the formulation, implementation, and monitoring of energy policies.
- Strengthen the Aspirational and Constitutional Oversight Role of the MPR RI — The MPR RI is encouraged to reinforce its role in ensuring that national energy policies align with Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution.
Ilham Maulana, National Chairperson of Generasi Energi Bersih (Clean Energy Generation), said that the hearing was a concrete example of the younger generation’s constructive participation in public policy. “We are not here to criticize but to offer solutions based on data and science. Energy democratization means giving space for communities and young people to be directly involved in Indonesia’s clean energy transformation,” said Ilham.
From the perspective of supporting institutions, Irwan Sarifudin, Coordinator of the Clean Energy Hub at the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) and Advisor to Gen-B, emphasized that the role of young people is fundamental to ensuring the long-term direction of the national energy agenda. “The energy transition is not just about replacing resources, but about determining who controls that energy. Involving young people means ensuring that the transition is fast, fair, and sustainable across generations,” said Irwan.
Previously, Gen-B took part in the Indonesia Zero Emissions 2050 Parade, organized by the Indonesia Zero Emissions Coalition 2050 (KIBE2050) on Sunday (19/10) in the Jakarta Car Free Day (CFD) area. A total of 117 young people participated in the event, voicing the spirit of clean energy transition and supporting efforts to accelerate Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2060 or sooner.
Through a creative parade highlighting themes of clean energy, low-carbon transportation, and sustainable lifestyles, the participants showcased the younger generation’s commitment to building an emission-free future.
“Young people are not only affected by the climate crisis, they must also be agents of change. Through this march, we want to show that our generation is ready to be part of the solution to achieve a carbon-free Indonesia,” said Riyan Nurrahman, Coordinator of the Indonesia Zero Emissions 2050 Parade.
In addition, KIBE2050 prepared an Open Letter to the President of the Republic of Indonesia, a Policy Summary of the New and Renewable Energy Bill (RUU EBET), and a petition titled “From Promises to Clean Energy Action.” These three documents serve as the main foundation for urging the government to take concrete steps toward achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060 or sooner.
