Sustainable Mobility and Transport Analyst

Iqbal Habibi Kamal or usually called Iqbal, interest in sustainable mobility led him to join the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) as a Sustainable Mobility and Transport Analyst. In this role, he focuses on implementing sustainable mobility programs through technical and economic assessments, policy advocacy recommendations, and stakeholder engagement. His work supports the achievement of transport sector decarbonization targets in Indonesia.

Before joining IESR, Iqbal worked in the public sector as a Transport Expert at the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), where he was involved in overseeing transportation projects funded by international grants as well as bilateral and multilateral cooperation. He was also part of the team supervising Indonesia’s road safety improvement program, mandated by Presidential Regulation No. 1 of 2022. At Bappenas, Iqbal also represented both Bappenas and Indonesia at international forums, including the Lead Implementing Body-Sustainable Infrastructure (LIB-SI) ASEAN Connectivity in Jakarta and the International Transport Forum (ITF) – OECD event in Bangkok. These experiences shaped him into a professional accustomed to engaging and coordinating with diverse stakeholders.

His academic background aligns with his professional work. Iqbal earned his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and later completed his master’s degree in Transportation Systems, also at UGM, graduating with distinction (cum laude) and achieved the recognition of being the fastest master graduate in the Faculty of Engineering UGM 2021. To this day, he continues to contribute to the academic field by publishing research on travel behavior, transport demand management, and sustainable mobility.

Outside of his professional role, Iqbal actively creates content on urban transportation to encourage the public to shift towards public transport and contribute to building more livable cities. To maintain his physical and mental well-being, he also regularly runs (not for competition), but as part of a healthy daily lifestyle.
