China’s Role in the Global Energy Transition : History, Current Trends, and Future Outlook

This policy brief highlights China’s dominant role as a global leader in renewable energy technology and clean technology innovation. These achievements are crucial for the global transition away from fossil fuels, greenhouse gas emission mitigation efforts, and climate change mitigation. Driven by strong government policies and the active involvement of state-owned enterprises, private companies, and national banks, China’s green development strategy has expanded globally, particularly through infrastructure projects funded under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), including solar and wind power plants, electric vehicles, and improved technology standards.

Clean energy innovation is not only reshaping China’s economic strategy by strengthening critical mineral supply chains but also expanding its global influence through cleantech trade and infrastructure investment. This positions China as a competitive alternative to Western dominance in the global market. Therefore, this policy brief calls on developing countries to capitalize on this momentum—especially through South-South cooperation schemes—to accelerate their energy transitions toward sustainable green development.
