Jakarta, October 21, 2024 – With six years to go, Nusa Penida is projected to become a 100 percent renewable energy island by 2030, which is part of the Bali Net Zero Emission (NZE) 2045 initiative launched by the Bali Provincial Government and supported by IESR and other stakeholders in August 2023. Executive Director of the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), Fabby Tumiwa emphasized that the Nusa Penida 100% Renewable Energy initiative is one of the fundamental steps to decarbonize the energy supply system in Bali, especially the electricity system, which is currently still dominated by fossil energy such as coal and diesel, which causes greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.
“The utilization of renewable energy in the region will increase the attractiveness of Nusa Penida as a major tourist destination, which has an impact on improving the welfare of the local community and preserving Bali’s natural environment,” Fabby said in Live Broadcast by RRI Denpasar Pro 1 entitled ‘Nusa Penida 100% Renewable Energy’ on Saturday (19/10/2024).
To realize the Nusa Penida 100% Renewable Energy initiative, according to Fabby, a roadmap has been created, which consists of three stages. The first stage focuses on increasing renewable energy capacity to meet the increasing growth in electricity demand. The second stage is to reduce the use of PLTD, which is currently very expensive and requires large subsidies. With replacement by renewable energy, these subsidies are hoped to be reduced. In the third stage, renewable energy will completely replace diesel generation. In addition, energy storage is an essential component of this transition. Technologies such as batteries and pump Hydro energy storage (PHES) using seawater are being considered to ensure a stable energy supply, even when the sun is not shining.
“The potential for renewable energy in Nusa Penida is large enough to meet electricity demand, which is projected to double in the next five years. With collaboration between the government, PLN, and various stakeholders, this project is expected to run successfully and become a model for renewable energy transition elsewhere,” said Fabby.
In addition, according to Fabby, the Nusa Penida 100% renewable energy initiative can reduce electricity subsidies so that the cost of electricity production will fall and the state budget can be allocated to the development of other sectors. Subsidy savings are one of the critical targets of this renewable energy project. Collaboration between various parties is also essential to the success of this initiative. IESR, PLN, and support from stakeholders such as universities, renewable energy associations, and local communities in Nusa Penida are expected to realize Nusa Penida as a 100% renewable energy island by 2030.
