Is Indonesia Ready for Nuclear Power?

The recent accident in TEPCO’s Fukushima Daicchi nuclear power plant (NPP) has once again raised alarm and anxiety over public safety of nuclear power. In Indonesia, it has triggered an intensive public debate on whether the idea to build nuclear power plants in the country should be continued. Some of the public events held were actually sponsored by BATAN, Indonesia’s Nuclear Energy Agency, which since last year received billions of rupiah from the state budget to supposedly initiate public consultations on nuclear power but instead, consultations have been used to promote the development of NPP.
