Government of Indonesia has set the target for solar deployment at 6.5 GW cumulative installed capacity of solar by 2025. General Planning for National Energy regulated the mandatory use of rooftop solar for public buildings (a minimum of 30% of roof area), but this has yet to be executed effectively.
We look at public and commercial buildings in Jakarta and Surabaya to understand their technical potential and how the government can use the information to accelerate rooftop solar deployment in Indonesia. Government should act as “early adopters”, play a major role in bulk procurement of rooftop solar and thus grow the market size.
