Public Webinar: Road to Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit (GHES) 2025 – Utilizing Green Hydrogen as a Decarbonization Effort in Indonesia

Background

The Green Energy Transition Indonesia (GETI) program, supported by the British Embassy in Jakarta, aims to increase investment in low-carbon energy through the Indonesia Green Hydrogen Accelerator initiative. One of the objectives of the program is to build a green hydrogen business ecosystem to support the National Hydrogen Strategy (SHN), which has been published by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) in December 2023. The initiative seeks to address various challenges in the hydrogen value chain, including the production, storage, and distribution stages, by focusing on studies for demand mapping, green hydrogen production potential, policy development, and improving collaboration between stakeholders.

The SHN has identified the period 2025-2030 as an important phase in building the foundation of the hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia, including the development of hydrogen standards, regulations, and certifications to drive market development. Following the issuance of the SHN in December 2023, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has established a hydrogen technical committee and conducted a green hydrogen supply chain feasibility study. However, the SHN is still general in nature, so the development of the Hydrogen National Roadmap is highly anticipated as a more detailed step in accelerating the development of hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia and maximizing the potential of the hydrogen market in the future.

Looking at the current hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia, hydrogen production in Indonesia is still largely focused on the needs of the fertilizer industry. However, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources projects that the utilization of low-carbon hydrogen will increase to reach 609 PJ by 2060 (MEMR, 2023). Seeing the high potential demand for hydrogen in both domestic and global markets, Indonesia has the potential for abundant renewable energy resources that can be utilized to produce green hydrogen to meet domestic needs and open export potential.

The Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit (GHES), organized by IFHE together with Electricity Indonesia on 15-17 April 2025, aims to encourage concrete action and global collaboration in making hydrogen a key pillar of Indonesia’s clean energy transition and industrial decarbonization. To support the GHES event, IESR will hold a webinar to increase public understanding of the role of green hydrogen in the energy transition, as part of the Road to GHES 2025 event series. The webinar will discuss the fundamentals of green hydrogen, its production technology, as well as global development trends. In addition, through real case studies, participants will gain insights into the implementation of hydrogen in various industrial sectors. The webinar will also discuss the driving factors for the realization of a green hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia, as well as the skills and workforce readiness needed to support the hydrogen industry in Indonesia.

Objective

  1. Raise public awareness of the role of green hydrogen in the energy transition and its current development in Indonesia.
  2. Introduce the concept of green hydrogen, including its production process and its benefits in supporting clean energy development and carbon emission reduction.
  3. Introduce opportunities and challenges in the development of green hydrogen in Indonesia.
  4. Educate participants on the latest technological innovations and skills that support the utilization of green hydrogen.
