Webinar and Study Launch: “Accelerating Renewables Investment in Indonesia: Shared use of the Transmission Network”
Background
Indonesia’s energy transition is entering a pivotal phase, with the government targeting 75 GW of additional renewable capacity by 2040 as part of its broader commitment to phasing out coal and achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.
However, corporate investment in renewable energy is still constrained by limited procurement mechanisms and geographical mismatches between industrial demand centers and renewable energy sources. Joint Utilization of Transmission Network (PBJT), stipulated in Permen of ESDM No. 11/2021, is an instrument created by the government to meet quality standards and system reliability, and distribute electricity from generation to load center through cooperation between business license holders. Globally, PBJT is better known as Power Wheeling. PBJT schemes can offer an important solution that allows corporate energy buyers to purchase electricity from renewable energy sources across PLN’s transmission infrastructure. This mechanism could unlock significant private investment, particularly from global initiatives such as RE100, where member companies commit to using 100% renewable energy.
This whitepaper launch aims to present evidence-based insights on how power wheeling can:
- Enable large-scale renewable energy investment and accelerate Indonesia’s energy transition
- Support PLN’s financial sustainability through optimized transmission use
- Align with regulatory frameworks such as the RUU EBET and PLN’s RUPTL
- Inform ongoing policymaking processes, including discussions in Commission XII of the Indonesian Parliament
Event Objective
- Officially launch the whitepaper and present its key findings to national and industry stakeholders
- Foster a constructive dialogue between policymakers, corporate energy buyers, and industry associations on the opportunities and challenges of implementing power wheeling
- Encourage broad recognition of power wheeling as a strategic enabler of Indonesia’s renewable energy and industrial decarbonization goals
- Leverage public communications to broaden awareness and strengthen policy momentum
